Cornell mourns businessman, philanthropist Paul Milstein; building bearing his name on track to open in 2011

Real estate developer, philanthropist and Cornell benefactor Paul Milstein died Aug. 8 at his home in Manhattan at the age of 88.

Paul and his wife, Irma Milstein, made possible the new building on campus that will bear his name; Paul Milstein Hall is under construction for the College of Architecture, Art and Planning.

"Our hearts and thoughts are with the Milstein family during this very difficult time," President David Skorton said. "The Milsteins are among the university's most dedicated leaders and generous benefactors. Cornell would not be the same institution it is today without their engagement and support."

Milstein Hall will open next summer, connecting Sibley and Rand halls. All the steel framing and the concrete roof are in place on the cantilevered, 47,000-square-foot building designed by Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Concrete was scheduled to be poured in mid-September for the interior dome, part of a planned 275-seat auditorium/lecture hall.
