Why health care for students requires an added touch

  • They may be inexperienced with managing their own health care and may have relied on a parent in the past
  • At a time when the judgment and decision-making centers of their brains are still maturing, students are making health-related choices in a social environment heavily influenced by peers
  • They are often late in recognizing they need care and hesitant to seek services
  • They can be ambivalent about their major health risks such as mental health, sexual health, sleep, and alcohol and drug issues
